Initial PETE Standard 6

Standard 6: Professionalism

Physical education teacher candidates demonstrate dispositions essential to becoming effective professionals.

Artifact 1: Advocacy Project

6.3: Demonstrate behaviors that are consistent with the professional ethics of highly qualified teachers.

My advocacy project was presented in EDU 470 Foundations of Education.  The project included a presentation and plan for putting a high and low ropes course in a school district for students to be able to utilize and for physical educators to teach outdoor education.  As a group we had to present in a way that would allow the board to approve.  We had to show them the reasons why a ropes course would be essential to students learning through the physical.

The results of my advocacy project show that it would be very possible to put in a ropes course at a school if enough fundraising was done, and the board approved.  It also showed how important outdoor education can be for students in physical education.

Artifact 2: Raquette Lake Reflections

6.2: Participate in activities that enhance collaboration and lead to professional growth and development.

My reflections were written at the end of my outdoor education experience at Raquette Lake.  I wrote them about what I had learned and how it would help me to become a better teacher in the future.

The results of my reflections showed that I learned a great deal from experiencing the outdoors first hand with other students.  I was able to take what I learned and put it towards becoming a better teacher and professional.

Participating in activities that enhance collaboration and lead to professional growth are important for being a physical educator because it gives you first-hand experience, which allows you to bring what you have learned into your teaching.  Being able to reflect on what you have learned allows you to take what you have learned and pass it on to your students.

Demonstrating behaviors that are professional is important in becoming an educator because it allows you to be respected both as a teacher and an individual by students, other teachers, administrators, and parents.
